Tough nut to crack

I donít know who put these lug nuts on or what they used but... I got 4 loosened after a lot of work, but #5 is not budging. I put a cross lug wrench on and stood on it and bounced to get some of them moving.

So far Iíve broken a socket extension, a socket adapter, and a socket. Nuthin. Tried the cross lug wrench, an 18Ē breaker bar, an impact driver, several BFHs, and the dreaded pipe extension on the ratchet. Nuthin.

#5 is starting to round off, so I'm worried I may have to resort to cutting.

Heading to the store tomorrow to pick up an electric impact wrench and a 3/4Ē half-inch drive socket.

Use a nut splitter and it wonít damage the wheel stud.

Re: Tough nut to crack

Put 2 back on either side of the tough one and tighten them then work on it. I have used the handle from a HI LIFT JACK as the breaker bar.

Re: Tough nut to crack

Lesson learned here - when tightening/loosening, only do 1/4-3/8 turn per nut in a star pattern.

From the description, I'd say the threads are most likely fubar already. Probably installed haphazardly with an impact gun. Might as well plan on replacing both (stud & nut) and just break it off with a breaker bar/pipe.

Re: Tough nut to crack

Put the nuts back on and go to a tire shop....they have a tool to remove locking nuts. May work ?
(and shop air should be 125ish too )

What kind of wheels ?
Are you re-using/selling/or ?

Last resort split it length wise as far as you can and then a chisel....extreme caution !!!!

As mentioned a 6 point socket is a must. I have used heat and a candle. The wax from the candle will wick up in the threads and help break it free. Sounds dumb, but been doing it for years on tough bolts. No particular scent candle.

Re: Tough nut to crack

The wheel needs to come off so I can do the last corner of my brake rebuild. 3 down, one to go.

Theyíre all 15x8 corvette rally rims, with BFG 235-65ís. They have a lot of tread on Ďem, actually look almost new...BUT, they have a mfg date of 1993, so theyíre going in the bin.

I may try the heat and candle wax method, Iíve heard of that one before. Iím just running out of patience. I have a nut cracker but I'm not sure I can get it in there to do the job. The car isnít road-legal right now, so driving it anywhere is out.

Naturally my air compressor died this winter, so now Iím going back and forth between replacing that and getting an electric impact wrench.

Break it off. Replace it when the wheel is off.

Re: Tough nut to crack

Yep, he needs more leverage ! I assume all the tools broke in the original post were 3/8" drive ? I'll loan ya my 3/4" drive set up if you pay the shipping.

Re: Tough nut to crack

If you donít want to split it or cut with and dremel and break the nut off the stud you need an impact wrench. The more leverage technique is going to end up hurting for sure.

Need a 1/2" drive 24" breaker bar and add a piece of pipe to it. Or go 3/4" drive......
