First oil change

Okay, another thing I *need* to do is give my Camaro an oil change. It's a 69 with a 302 in it, and I have no idea how long it's been since the oil was changed, atleast 5 years (of which it's been sitting and limited in having been driven), and the person who knows what's in it passed away 2 years ago. So I'm working blind here. Any suggestions on oil, filter and any additives would be super helpful. Thanks!

Re: First oil change

Any 10-30 brand oil. I prefer WIX filters. The NAPA "gold" filters are made by WIX.

IDK what chain auto part stores you have in your area but O'Rielys here carry WIX. You can buy any brand you want. Most chain auto part stores websites you can "enter your vehicle" (year, make & model) so when you search for a part, like oil filter, all the brands they have available that are applicable to your car will show up. Once you find part #'s/brand you can order them from Amazon, including any oil type, if you prefer to shop that way

Re: First oil change

You need to use an oil that has the proper additives for the old style flat tappet camshaft. I would use 10W30 Valvoline Racing or one of the "Hot rod" oils that are available. Make sure that they mention "zinc" or ZDDP on the label. Wix or AC Delco filter will work fine.

^^, Op. I missed the 302 part. Your brake thread noted drum brakes, which if true than the car would not have been a Z28 with 302 motor. However the previous owner may have put in a 302 flat tappet motor

Valvoline VR1 or Joe Gibbs Racing oil have high Zinc content which you want for a flat tappet cam motor....assuming that is what you have

Re: First oil change

Valvoline VR-1. There are many good high ZDDP oils, but the Valvoline is probably most widely available off the shelf at your local store which is why I recommend it. I use VR-1 in my flat tappet engine with no issues. Quality WIX filter (WIX makes Napa Gold filters too). Here is a list of oils many here have used and the Zn and P levels.

Re: First oil change

w/vegas, not pricy and works great.
If you are a synthetic guy 15/50 has the good stuff in it for FT engines I think its a waste though.

Re: First oil change

I bought a case of Wix filters for my 69 and I run Brad Penn 10w30. Everyone has their favorite oil, but I would definitely not cheap out with a flat tappet cam. You will pay for it with modern oils. Honestly, everyone complains about Fram, but I used to run them in a lot of vehicles and never had a problem.
