Hi new member here. I have a 64 Tempest I want to repaint to original color which is Sunfire Red (Color Code N). Need help in finding source for paint in my area. I am trying not painting trunk and door jams this is a 20,000 mile original car.

stopped by local (Detroit area) body shop supply place, little hole in the wall that was recommended to me by a friend whos buddy does custom paint on bikes, they can mix any custom color and put it in aerosol cans for 35.00 a pop, had never heard of that, quoted a price for BC/CC for my car (5qts) each with reducer, activator, solvent, and degreaser for around $475.00 paint is Matrix, this sound about right for a good paint? Try Painters Supply, PPG, yellow pages for body shop supplies, most have matching capabilities.

Sorry I should have indicated I am in Southwest Missouri. I have done some checking and know paint can be mixed useing Dupont's cheaper brand of paint and it is pretty close. We tried a scanner on inside of deck lid and it was off a bunch when test sample was mixed. I would like to find a outlet that knows their mix is pretty much dead on to original color.

have heard same thing about Omni and some of the other cheaper blends, remember 45 year old paint even though area is not exposed to sunlight will still be slightly off new mix of original color, if your only fethering it to the edge of your doors and trunk/hood, it shouldn't be noticeable. doors (if post car) and trunk you can blend under new weather stripping, hood and inner fenders depends would probably be better to overspray with the new color or if your upper fender wrap into engine bay is good you can feather it into the inside corner. make sure you test any paint and clear over yours somewhere to make sure you dont have an adverse reaction where new blends into old. just getting ready to do my hood and trunk, jambs and interior are all done, new color is a metallic in the same blend as original so i am just overspraying them and clearing when i paint the body.

I had a custom color match done at tcp once. the first time it wasn't close enough so they sent me a second attempt for free. they will keep trying until you are happy

are you saying the person with the scanner didnt have a formula for the original code?

Hey there 66TempestGT, getting ready to start body work on my 66' Tempest, has all metal original paint under flat black epoxy, few minor dings and scrapes to smooth out (pictures of the worst of it in my album) was just wondering what steps you would take to prep it for paint, have seen some of your work on here and it's amazing. and how is Matrix BC/CC paint?

Dupont paint shop with Scanner but no formula except for Duponts off brand.

am i wrong or was'nt dupont one of the original suppliers of that paint? seems odd they would not have a book of their own furmula.

they have the formula, they just dont make the exact ingredients anymore. something about government regulations and no demand and stuff like that. the colors they have will be fine for an all over job. just cant get an exact match for painting just a fender or something.

i know over the years they have banned a lot of pigments in artist paints, sure same is similar for auto paint
