I have been going through, testing and repairing my wiring harnesses. I have been working on the dash wiring and the engine wiring harnesses.

My question involves the ignition wire to the coil. I am now running the Pertronix ignition, but my wiring harness has the resistor wire in it. I have read that the Pertronix ignition needs full 12 volt and that running them through the resistor wire can cause premature failure.

I know many of you suggest running points and I may learn that lesson and go back to them at some point but for now, I will be staying with the Pertronix.

I am thinking about adding a full 12 volt wire to the engine harness. Since I have both harnesses out of the car, it would be relatively easy to add a wire to an open spot in the bulkhead connectors. On the dash harness side, I would tap the same wire that connects to the resistor wire on the engine harness side. Then, I could use one or the other wire, depending on if I was running points or the Pertronix ignition. I would obviously secure and insulate the unused wire.

I did think about replacing the resistor wire completely and then just adding a resistor to the full 12volt wire if I ever went back to points, but I would have to rip apart the harness to replace the resistor wire.

Has anyone done the same? Any thoughts about this approach?

Just use the wire you have now to trigger a relay. That relay can give your ignition the full 12v. Then you dont have to cut the resistor or run a new wire.

Most petronix systems i’ve worked on are setup on a relay like that.

That is a great idea! I ran a new wire myself, but GTO44's idea is even better (and easier).

I am like GTO44...I run a relay for Petronix, just screwed to the firewall. You just twist the two ends of the resistor and coil wire together and put a spade terminal on it, use solder as well..

Put this to the switch terminal of the relay. The relay will close with 6 volts and stay closed with 1.5 volts or so.

When the ignition key is turned all the way to crank it will give 12 volts to the coil and when it starts it will also give 12 volts to the coil.

If you want to go back to points, you can cut the relay off and go back, or use another relay and a resistor to drop the voltage....

Relay:

85- ground
86- old coil wire (with factory resistor)
30- 12v battery
87- coil +

Easy peasy
