problem on my winter car??

Since the GTO is worthless in the snow (without buying an $800 set of snow tires) , I bought a 1991 Mercury Topaz AWD. The battery light stays on all the time and the headlights are very dim. I have tried a few batteries and have the alternator checked at a rebuild shop and they said nothing was wrong with it. However, the ground from the block to the chassis has clearly been taken off and put back on, so im thinking thats its getting a bad ground and not allowing the alternator to provide the power it should. I bought an 8" piece of 4 guage wire to redo that gound. But I wont be able to change it for a few days do to a busy schedule. And its supposed to snow soon. Does it sound like im on the right track to you guys??? And will 4 guage be enough to fix it and if this doesnt fix it what else should I try?

P.S. Im kinda new here and if asking non-GTO questions is a no-no I appoligize

My exhaust is the alarm clock for everyone on my route to work. Your Welcome
