1968 impala Short water pump 327

We just got our radiator back from shop and installed it and shroud. I went to local parts store and got a water pump to see how figment went, it is a short pump. However the back of pump is butted up to timing cover, is this normal. I can’t even slide a credit card between the two.

We are in the process of trying to figure out the pulleys and brackets as we have none. And I don’t want to spend money on wrong pulleys.
This car has power steering and AC

It is normally tight, but not that tight. Might have been surfaced or there may be an extra thick gasket under the timing cover to clear a cam button or some other aftermarket part.

Ok, it’s not glued in. I will check clearance tomorrow. It is an Autozone pump.
It does look like it’s sealed to block.
