Temp gauge gone south

The temperature gauge on my 2008 Impala LS (V6) stopped working. The message "Engine Hot A/C Off" was displayed. The temp gauge was completely dead - showing no temp. I replaced the the coolant temp sensor and verified electrical continuity on the harness wires and the attached connector contacts that mates to the sensor. However, the problem still exists. I'm thinking that the sensor outputs a small analog micro voltage that varies with coolant temp and ultimately goes maybe to an ECM and A /D conversion for digital logic testing. But, why is the analog signal not passed on to the temp meter ? Maybe there is an open in the wiring down stream somewhere, but it's beyond me to find it. Has anyone experienced this problem and what might be the fix ?
