2008 Impala Issues w/ Startup

have a 2008 Chevy Impala 3.5L V6 (Owned for the last 6 years; 120K miles). Below are the issues I'm dealing with

After the car has been sitting for awhile it starts up fine (i.e. in the morning)

After I make one stop and go to turn it on again, it sputters and dies out. It takes about 4 to 5 attempts to get it going. When I finally get it going I have to let it run for awhile while in park or else it will die out when I go to put it in gear.

White smoke and the smell of gas on the start up.

I think it's interesting that it starts fine after the car has been sitting for hours. This leads me to believe that it might be the fuel pump however, I want to ask you guys to get your opinion. Maybe y'all have experienced this before. Thanks in advance for the help!

Ok, it runs fine in open loop, and something is wrong in closed loop. I would immediately suspect the coolant temperature sensor. When they fail, the computer thinks the temp is a different value and sends the wrong A/F mix. Unplug that sensor to test. Also, run codes.

BTW, this forum deals with classic old RWD Impalas from the 1960s. For help with your late model FWD, check out www.impalaforums.net.

Two doors, four doors, wagons, and ragtops.
