67 Impala won't go into gear

My 67 Impala has a TH350 transmission. I was driving down the road the other day and it all of a sudden started slipping. It would pull then release...pull, release then nothing as if in neutral. Engine ran fine and I coased to a stop. It won't go into any gears including reverse. Besides replacing the transmission are there any other possibilties?

How's the fluid level?

Two doors, four doors, wagons, and ragtops.

Fluid check

Adam,
Just to be sure, you are checking the fluid with the car running, correct? People often make the mistake of checking tranny fluid with the car off so all the fluid has settled into the pan and shows a full reading when in fact it may be low.

I dropped the pan and found a lot of sludge in the bottom. Ran a magnet through it and it was all metal. Very fine though like mud.

Hey Paul, Yes I checked with it running and warm. I wonder though, if the tranny is completely out of commision now will it read correctly at all?

tranny

Adam,
Based on your finding, metal sludge, doesn't sound very promising, I would probably have it checked out at a tranny shop.
