2008 impala temp problems

I have a 2008 impala 3.9 we bought new in 2009 and has about 65k on it.

To start, this past winter the heater would blow only cold air and would not warm up until 15 minutes into a drive. Even when idling for 30 minutes, the blowing air would still be cold until that 15 minute mark.

Last week, 5 minutes in to a short drive to the grocery store, the temp needle shot from the middle to the highest point, the temp lite came on and the dash message said "engine overheat idle engine". 5-10 minutes of continued driving and everything goes back to normal ( lite off, message gone and needle to the middle). This happens every time we drive, and seems to happen every 30 minutes on longer trips..

Today, as my wife is driving to work, every light and dashboard messaged went on while driving and shortly after, went off.

Any advice? Thanks in advance.

You'll be able to find help for your late model Impala at the W body forums:

This place is focused on classic Impalas from the 50s-70s.

Two doors, four doors, wagons, and ragtops.
