Beautiful area - but the winters are very harsh with lake effect snow sometimes reaching inland. Plenty of salt is also thrown down. Was on relatively new "southern tier" Route 17 expressway in 2008, concrete pavement was breaking up and spalling at the control joints. Why they (NYDOT) used that instead of flexible (asphalt) pavement is beyond me.
