2014 Impala and Impala SS

Here we go, I'll start........ Would you buy one if money is not an issue?

I myself will be looking closely at it. Having been true to the nameplate for decades.

As Allen reminded me......to buy as the sporty family car, of course we'll keep our toys. .
So far I've owned an 01' 05' and a 10' and liked them all.

For me, no. But I do think it's a nice family-oriented car.

No. I have always been a Chevrolet guy. But 90% of the new cars don't cut it for me. The last new car I bought was a 95 Impala SS. It was a fun car. If I were to buy a new car it would be a Camaro SS convertible. As for now our everyday choice of transportation is truck based.

Is the 2014 Impala going to still be FWD? I have never owned a FWD car, not likely to start anytime soon.

No the new Impala is going to be a four door Camaro. Both are going to be built on the Zeta chassis which has an independent rear wheel drive suspension (same as found on the Corvette).

It will replace the W-body front wheel drive Impala that is made now though it will keep the same LS-A version of the V-6 as the base motor (able to crank out 323 horsepower and still get 27 mpg in the city) with a V-8 limited to police cars and the SS version. It will look a lot like the former V-body Pontiac G-8 (because the tooling is now paid for but it didn't get much use before Pontiac closed their doors for good).

The new Impala is front wheel drive, the SS is a seperate model that will be rear wheel drive. no photos of it have been released at this time as far as I know.

The SS will be available in mid year 14'. And it will be basically a trimmed out civilian police car which is RWD and a 6.0, rumor has it .

I've always had a problem with a four door front wheel drive car being called an SS - no matter what kind of performance it has. Maybe I'm just old fashioned. I could handle a front wheel drive SS if it came in a 2 door package, though.

appears to have been "malibuized" both standard engines are fours.
this 14 impala seems more like a larger compact or small mid size car.

It looks like the same old boring jelly bean looking sedan that most cars today seem to look like. The interiors though techy are just as boring. Take the badges off the cars running around on the roads and you wouldn't know one from the other.

GM realized the SS designation was getting out of control a few years back so they implemented guidelines as to when it could be used on a vehicle. I mean really an "SS" Trailblazer? A six cylinder "SS" Monte Carlo? Give me a break.

So it gets 27 mpg. My 436 hp Corvette gets 29 mpg on the highway.

Ya but your Corvette is running as a four cylinder on the highway (assumes you have a 2003 or newer Corvette with displacement on demand LS series motor). What does it get in stop and go traffic?

I know with my old 582 powered Impala I was more concerned about the number of tires per year than I was about miles per gallon.

I have 2 cars built in the early 60s and two built in the early 70s and a vette in the 90s. Why on earth would I want a corolla look alike?

Close Dave. A Vette running on 4 cylinders is only available on the LT1, 2014 C7 Vette which hasn't gone on sale yet. Displacement on demand (which is a better description) is called. "active fuel management" by GM. It's a marketing thing to "imply" green, good fuel economy, etc.

City driving I still get 23 mpg.
