What's the difference?

I'm new to the Impala/Caprice world... my son and I are working on a 1970 Caprice, 2-door. I would like to buy some body parts for him for Christmas, but need a little identification help first. The car we have has a roof line like the one pictured below. Is this a Custom or a Sport?
Many thanks in advance...
Patrick

Check out the tag team section, there you'll find out how to decode the numbers

Thanks Josey! With all due respect, I don't want to decode the trim tag. Besides, I don't have the trim tag info with me right now. I just need to know if the roof line pictured is considered a 'Sport' or a 'Custom'.

I was always under the impression that a Caprice was a Caprice, simple as that. I read in an early dealer book that it had it's own roofline; that may have been from '65 or '66. The guy I got my '66 Biscayne from had a '66 Caprice and it's roof line was definately different than the Biscayne's.

I think it would be safe to just buy for a '70 Caprice and not worry about the custom/sport moniker. I don't think it applies to the Caprice.

Watch for updates starting soon in my blog here ~ http://www.impalas.net/forums/blog.php?u=1588
And on my own website ~ http://www.violentlee.com/biscayne.html

I have 1970 Impala/Caprice catalog at home (I think). If I remember, I look for it and see if there were different body styles for Caprice.

I believe 68 was the introduction of the Impala Custom Coupe which shared the same roofline as the Caprice, which was still available. The only differences being trim basically. The Caprice was still the top model which had wood grain trim and knobs etc. So, in 68 Chevy offered the Biscayne 2 and 4 door (Bel Aire in Canada), Impala 2 and 4 dr, Impala Custom coupe 2dr only and Caprice 2 door sport coupe and Caprice 4 door.

From what I have gathered throughout the years 68-70 Caprice 2door was the same as the Impala Custom. The Caprice had more trim options and fender skirts. The Impala had 2door and 2door SS or 2door sport unless it said custom it was straight back window.

My catalog lists only Caprice Sedan and Caprice Coupe for 1970. So it looks like there was only one roof-line for the 1970 Caprice.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. After the fact, I located the image below, that illustrates the different roof lines for a 69 model 2-door. The top image, Custom Coupe, shows the same roof line that our 70 Caprice has.
So did Chevy drop the Sport Coupe altogether for 1970? Or was it just not available on the 2-door Caprice?
I'm sure this questions sounds goofy to some of you guys, but like I said, I'm new to big Chevies... just trying to figure out what's what.

The images are really very helpful. You have presented the roofs very nicely.

Patrick,

Just to help make things a little more clear, in 1970 there were two 2-Dr Roofs. The Impala and the Impala Custom like you have. The Impala Custom and the Caprice have the same roof style.
