negative battery cable

I'm replacing my negative battery cable and I'm finding either 4 gage, or 2 gage available. Is there any significant difference in function? It's a standard install on a '63 sb.

The heavier the gauge wire the more current it can carry without overheating due to resistance. GM went to smaller 4 gauge wire top save money per car not because it is better. Older cars had 2 gauge wire for 12 volt systems and 00 for a 6 volt system.
