Talking New to site with 19966 Impala SS

HI just joined!! Me and my dad have recently inherited a 1966 Impala SS that my uncle, my dads brother had for 30 plus years. It needs to be finished up but my uncle did get most of the hard stuff done before he passed away in June of this year. We will miss him greatly. My dad has decided to get the car finally done starting hopefully this spring. What I do know about the car is that it is a big block car and supposedly a 427 car. I think it was opted with a 4 speed, P/S, console with gauges, and tach. It is black in side and out. Hopefully I can get some insight as to witch engine came in the car since it has been gone since my uncle bought it over 30 years ago, it does have a small block in it now. I will try to show as many pics as I can when the work gets started. here is what it looks like now.

Welcome Travis. I was just in Berea, KY last week. Your 66 looks like a great project. There are tel tel signs as to what engine was in the car originally. The vin nor cowl will tell if it was a 427 car. Only a 6 or 8 cyl.

Tach

Taking a pic o the cowl tag will help us provide you with some information regarding originality. As stated, the VIN probably beginning with 16837 will only tell us the model and whether it was a 6 or 8 cyl. Out of curiosity, is it a 6K or 7K tach? The 427 390 HP engine with a 4-spd would have come standard with a 7K tach 5500 red line, the 427 425HP had a 7K tach with a 6000 red line. Also does the gauge package have a clock or manifold gauge?

Actually I live in Berea but the car stays in Winchester in a build that we rent. It sits there along with all the other cars my uncle owned. He had about 5 Studebakers and a 50 ford also. As far as the implala I do know that it has the bigger fuel lines and a 12 bolt rear end that im not sure what ratio is in it. I found a box that had a new 3.31 ring and pinion for the car but I could not find anything on the car that showed what is in it. My dad thinks it had 4.10s or 3.73s originally. it has been swapped in the past so im not sure. I will try to post the vin tags.

Cowl or Trim Tag

Really need the Cowl or Trim tag pic not so much the VIN. It's the tag right by the windshield washer motor.
Looks like this:

Well Now

That kind of throws a monkey wrench into the mix. Looks to me like a 6000 red line which was only available with a 427 425 HP car. Now, of course, anyone can install any tach they want so we can't determine by this alone the engine size. Waiting for the pic of the cowl tag please.

To sorta answer the question about the console gauges I have two sets one with clock and one with vac. The one with the clock looks more complete and has the wiring harness still attached maybe the one orginally out if the car. It looks like the plastic side pieces are broken... Witch could be hard to find. There are a lot of parts so it's hard to tell what is what. My uncle over there years collected many 66 ss parts from swap meets.

Trim tag

W - tinted windshield
2S-Rear Antenna
2L- M20 4spd Trans
2R-Rear speaker
02B-Build date 2nd week of Feb 1966.
813-B Black Vinyl bucket seat interior.

The M20 was available with all V8 motors so that doesn't help. All big blocks with 4-spd trans received a tach. The majority of the items specific to the 425 HP were part of the engine which is gone now, dual pulleys, dual snorkel air cleaner, idler pulley and more. Many items you could have found in the 427 390 HP and some even in the 396. Perhaps a build sheet somewhere to be found under the rear seats?

I have looked all over the car for a build sheet and have not found it. with that said it could be in a folder some where my uncle kept all the documentation he had for all his cars in labeled folders. We are stull slowly going through the stiff in his house so I might have a chance to look one night this week. I do remember him telling me he had it so I probably was put up somewhere safe.

I tried driving the car over the weekend and I have a really weird issue. When the car is running the gen light is staying on I have not checked into the charging system to see if it is charging yet. But I noticed that I have no illumination when the light switch is on but the turn signal indicators light up. First let me say I work as a mechanic and I am familiar with diagnosing electrical problems but when I comes to older cars I don't have access to wiring diagrams, I also didn't see this car disassembled so I am kinda lost in this area. I spent a whole afternoon checking power and grounds that I could see with a test light and didnt get anywhere. Any help on this I would appreciate a lot!!! I would like to drive it some before it gets into winter. But it didndt restart when I stopped for gas and I had to jump it.

You can find wiring diagrams on-line as well as buying larger versions printed on paper.

2 things

Well, does seem odd that your Gen light is on at all due to the fact that when you have gauges the idiot lights don't work, so the gauges mat have been added. Second, check the dimmer switch, they are notorious for these type of problems.

Also, sign up on this site and join the 1965 1966 section, once joined they have a reference library with loads of books and wiring diagrams along with accessory installation books, assembly manuals, parts books, etc. it's all free:

Thanks for the advice! I will take a look at the site and see If I can get to bottom if the problem. I think part of my problem is that not everything is hooked up to the cluster I noticed when I had it out the fuel gauge and tach did not have a anything hooked to them. Both gauges don't work so I will work on it in my spare time. What little time I got to drive it it was fun and keep thinking that a big block needs to put back in it oh and still no luck on find a build sheet.

It's been a long time since I have been on the site. Car is still the same and still no build sheet. Still trying to find some way finding out if this is one of the few remaining L72 cars or not. Fixed the cluster issues found ground wire laying up in the dash. Waiting for the estate of my uncle to finally be settled then the car is off for resto!!! Hopefully it will been soon.

Sorry about the pics I moved a bunch of things around on photo bucket. I will get some new pics up soon. I might have the car out this weekend just to drive it and will try to snap some fresh shots of it.
