I can't tell if it's a true ss

I can't find where to post at but I'm about to buy a 68 ss 396 I can't tell if it's a true ss he gave me the vin but they don't specify can anybody help me please before I buy it

If the vin matches the motor that would be a good start. Try googling 68SS and see what pops up.

For 1968 is difficult to determine, as the Impala SS was eliminated as a separate model and Super Sport became model options for the standard Impala. Nothing in the VIN will reflect if you have a SS.

The best way to determine what you have is original paperwork - a Protect-O-Plate or a build sheet.

One way to tell if it's a real SS is to see what the trim code is on the cowl tag. Super Sport only means bucket seats and console, (unless it's an SS427 car), even a 6 cylinder could be had with an SS. For instance, 812 is vinyl bucket seats. so get the info on the cowl tag and either post it here or do a search on Impala cowl tag decoding. BTW, welcome. Don S
