Firewall Paint

The firewall on my Marina blue 67 impala ss is semi gloss black except by the tag and wiper motor- it is blue there. It almost looks like they ran out of paint at the factory as this was a one owner car it hasnt been touched. My body shop guy is sure the firewall should be blue, but all the restored 67s i've seen have black firewalls. anyone know for sure what paint came on 67 firewall? TIA

As I understand GM's procedures the top of the firewall (cowl area) down to about the seam was painted body color and the rest of firewall down to toe board was painted semi gloss black to make engine paint stand out from body color. Looking at old assembly line photos it looks like the lower fire wall wasn't painted until after the car was run through paint tunnel and body color applied. Then fire wall was masked with card board as black paint was sprayed on (note lack of protective clothing, respirators or even ventilation as the cloud of overspray in the air obscured lighting in paint tunnel).

If your car was produced in Canada, it did get a body colored firewall. Otherwise it was semi-gloss black.
