64 Belair Wagon

Hi, I'm picking up a 64 Belair Wagon that is missing the motor and tranny, I ran the vin and know it was a V-8 with a Powerglide, I was wondering what you guys are running and if you would put the same in it. I'm not necessarly into being original, I just want a good running car, so any suggestion's would be appreciated. Also what wheel tire combo would suggest, thanks Derek

PowerGlide would be my last choice in a transmission. They have six speed automatics now so a two speed transmission is next to useless. I would be looking at a four spped 700R4 (or the 4L60 that replaced it) or a 200R4 transmission as your first choice. As to the motor all small blocks look the same on the outside, so a 265 looks just like a 406 unless you are being judged for points at a show. Only you need know what is under the hood and the rest are easily misdirected by a simple decal.

I would save the motor and transmission for last as getting the car ready is the hardest part of a restoration. A motor can be had in a weekend mail order and the same for a mail order transmission. I would get the car ready for paint and fix up the interior as the warranty on crate motors start when you buy them not the first day you get to take the car out for ride.

Thanks Big Dave, if I go with a 700r4 is there a way to make the stock column work with it? I have been working on my 62 c-10 and replace the column with a 93 s-10 and it looks good with it, but was wanting to keep the interior all original if possible, but I could care less if it is or not. I like my vehicles for me, not for shows.
Thanks Derek
