New guy and gal from TN

Hey everyone, my name is James. New to this forum, but definitely not new to car forums in general. I am joining up on the forum to do a bunch of research for me and my wife. My wife received a beautiful '62 Impala from her father as sort of high school graduation gift. She was able to drive it her senior year in high school, but we haven't been able to drive it since then. The car has been sitting for about 8-9 years now, in a garage, and I am going to be retrieving it very soon. We have pretty big plans for it, as I am a big time car buff, and she loves cars as well.

I plan on getting some pics up soon. In the meantime, I am mostly hear to read, and learn more about this gorgeous car. I am going to have a little bit of maintenance to catch up on, and am probably going to be looking for some little pieces to try to clean some stuff up as we update the car.

Welcome to the Team James!

What required it to be parked for nine years? Do you remember the symptoms?

Thanks for the welcomes. College is what parked the car for 9 years. That and the fact that the weather stripping is all pretty worn, so there is a pretty bad exhaust smell in the car from what I remember. It's been so many years though, that I don't really recall. I am going to be dropping the fuel tank and cleaning it out, and also changing the oil and filter and replacing the battery. Hopefully it will get the car running good enough to drive it around a little bit and get to know what exactly needs to be fixed.

The gas smell is probably from worn out to missing exhaust donuts at the tail pipe were it meets the cast iron manifold. A leaky exhaust lets carbon monoxide out to get into your car as well as making an annoying ticking sound if you have a small leak. You will need good torch to heat the metal up to cherry red and then quench just the stud and nut part with a squirt bottle (like a recycled house hold cleaner bottle filled with water) so that the stud shrinks quickly, letting you unbolt it, rather than breaking off the stud which often happens. A few cycles of extreme heating and quickly cooling and the stud will practically fall out.

That's awesome. I will definitely look into that. I am and Engine/Transmission tech for Crest Cadillac in Nashville, so I have used that trick many times. When I get the garage here straightened up, I am gonna go get the Impala from her parents'. That is where it has been parked for quite a while. When I get it, I will post up pics.

Good luck with the Impala, You will find that there are a lot more parts available for your car now ,than 8-9 years ago.

That is great news. We don't need a whole lot, but we are definitely going to need some things. I have been browsing the classifieds already.

Here's the pics of the car. I had to scan some old pictures. Haven't had a chance to hit up the garage yet. Also threw in a pic of us to put names to faces.

Me and the wife in our engagement pic over 2 years ago. It doesn't even seem that long ago.

I work in Nashville but live near Murfreesboro. Do you come to any of the Belk Cruise-ins?

Looks clean, hope it hasn't deteriorated during its storage.

I hope not either. The outside still looks exactly like those pictures. We will find out soon. I am getting anxious and it's not really even my car. It's really the wife's car, but I still am so ready to see her driving it again. I don't know what it is about women driving old cars, but there almost isn't a better combination in my opinion.

My mom lives in Murfreeboro. Haven't been to Belk cruise-in. When is it and where? I go to the old Bellevue Mall cruise-in first Sat. of the month.

Thanks impala67.

The Belk cruise-in is every Friday Night starting tonight through Oct. It's at the Belk in The Avenue Mall in Murfreesboro. Tonight's show is going to be huge. They are all pretty big really, but the first and last show always seem to have the 500+ car turnout. If you are a big old school car guy, this cruise-in is a must. I haven't been to the Bellevue Mall one, but I think I have heard about it. There is also one in Mt. Juliet that I am going to definitely be going to this year.
