New guy in SC

Just bought a 69 convertible allegedly SS and looking forward to a summer of cruising around in it. Car will always be a driver but I enjoy keeping it up in good condition.
I'll hit the tag team forum later after I get the car up on stands to get all the numbers but it is a bucket seat optioned 4 speed manual console car. Had a big block in it but during a previous "pretty good" restoration, the owner swapped out to a built 350. Correct grill and steering wheel plus emblems in the right places but the emblems could be had anywhere. Always titled as an SS. We'll see if it stands up to scrutiny.

Welcome to the Team John!

Your trim tag will tell you if you have an SS or not. Unlike the pony cars; all you get from the SS package is bucket seats and some next to useless badges and special trim. It has no affect on the power under the hood or upon the suspension. You could order a SS with a six cylinder on the base car.

In a Camaro or a Chevelle the SS bought you performance as well as badges as they offered high performance motors not available without the SS designation, heavy duty suspension (two different levels were offered above stock), disc brakes, HD cooling and alternator and the offer of gauges in a custom console. You could order all of these things in an Impala as well but you had to do the work yourself. Ordering the SS didn't get you much other wise.

Thanks. Actually, the 1969 Impala was only offered with a 427 and you did get factory disc brakes with the car. That being said, you could order the engine, trans, seats, and disc brakes with a regular Impala. All you got extra for checking the SS option was a few badges and a different grill but it did mandate the engine/brakes. I don't know if you can really truly verify a 1969 SS from a regular Impala from records. Either way, I still enjoy the car and the SS designation is just something that would be nice to try and verify. My car has the correct grill and brakes and the body tag points to an SS build but it stops there. If I can nail down the original engine, I think it would be enough for me. Either way, the car will get a 427 next winter.
