I have a 4L80e behind my big block and have I used the same tranny for years behind a number of powerful big blocks with only a change in the torque converter to match the differing cam of each motor. Before I bought that tranny I had three 700R4 trannies in one month break behind a stone stock ZZ502 that only makes 500 horsepower (think of all the 650 horsepower small blocks you read about on the web).

The 700R4 was rebranded a 4L60 under GM's new naming system. 4 indicates the number of forward gears, L tells you it is a rear wheel drive transmission Longitudinal, rather than Travers for a wrong wheel drive like the new Impala W-bodies are. A that all important two digit indicator of how strong the tranny is so you can compare them to other transmissions (indicates the torque rating). 60 is the weakest and 85 is currently the strongest car tranny available with a medium truck transmission being rated at a 90.

So a 4L85e (the e means electronic or computer controlled) is a very strong transmission based upon improvements made to my 4L80e that is based upon the earlier 3L80 we know and love as a TH400.
