66SSConvertible decode

I will try to attach pictures of my cowl tag and vin plate.

I believe i have decoded much of the tag, but i would be interested to see if my findings are correct. If anyone is interested in giving it a decode, i would appreciate it.

Also, Given that the Lordstown plant fired up in April of 66, and didn't start spitting out vehicles for a few weeks, is it possible the "79" after the plant name an inticates a very low build number?... I don't know if those numbers follow any type of sequence.

Well Jeff referring to my pocket book "Chevy Cowl Tags: 1950-1975" written by Mark S. Allen

the tag decodes as:

05C ==========> 3rd week of MAY build date
66 ===========> 1966 Production year
16867 =========> Impala SS 2dr Convertible
LOR ==========> Lordstown, Ohio assembly plant
79 ===========> Fisher Body production sequence number for quality control
813-B =========> Black vinyl bucket seats
F ============> Marina Blue paint
2 ============> Black convertible top
Group one options:
E=============> All around tinted glass
X ============> Power Windows
Group two options:
Z ============> Tilt steering wheel
S ============> Rear Antenna
R ============> Rear Seat Speaker
Group four options:
F ============> Comfort and Convenience Package
Group five options:
Y ============> Deluxe seat belts

If you are worried about Numbers Matching cars then his other book will probably be the better buy as it covers not only the Impala's Cowl numbers, it also includes the transmission numbers and casting numbers as well a major part numbers used to build the B-body car.

What's the info stamped into the metal tag on the side of the TH400?

Thanks Dave, it's nice to get the confirmation from yet another source. Everything except the Z matched precisely what i had.

Regarding the fisher body sequence number, aside from hearsay, I don't have a confident thought on weather those sequence numbers relate to the number vehicle that left the plant. It wouldn't matter a hoot, but it would be a cool piece of information for me (and the car) if it was one of the first 100 cars off the line in that plant. 3rd week of May letting loose it's 79th vehicle after a plant opening in mid April? Dunno if that dog hunts or not.

Thanks again,

The car is asleep in storage for the winter so i don't have immediate access to look at the complete code, but i have a grainy picture of the tag in one of the many i have taken. Best i can make out is what looks like a light blue tag, on the left is a C.....or a G, and on the right side is an A. There are other markings that i can't discern from the pic. I will look again in May. When i went around the car checking all the numbers i could find....glass....radio...axle etc, i didn't find any that didn't match. I remember doing the transmission and it checked out.
