Smile 68 numbers matching impala

Hi, my name is William. I'm new to the forum I have a 1968 327 impala with a 2 speed power glide transmission with the original bill of sale and protect-o-plate. I want to know how can I tell if I have a numbers matching car. Thanks in advance for the information.

If you have the Protect-O-Plate all you need do is look at the VIN on the door jamb. If the numbers match the Protect-O-Plate you now know every warranted part that was installed on your car as it lists most options installed. If your motor has the last six numbers of your VIN stamped on the motor ID pad then it is the original motor.

The last six VIN numbers are also stamped on the pan rail of your transmission, or on the governor cover. The full VIN is stamped in two different locations on the frame as well as in three locations on the body that were easy to get to before other parts of the car were assembled going down the line.

Numbers matching generally refers to the motor and trans being original, but others such as car show judges wearing white gloves also check the date codes cast into the component parts of your car to determine when it was made. Every part of every GM vehicle had an identifying date code and product identification of some sort to trace any defects back to the vendor for quality control as well as inventory control.
