Exclamation Engine ID codes

How can I tell what engine was original to my 1966 Impala without the build sheet or Protect-O-Plate?

what engine

There is no way to be exact, you actually have to somewhat work backwards by using the information/equipment you know is original.

Example:
If you have A/C you could not have a 427/425, if you have a turbo-hydromatic trans you had to have either a 396 or 427-390HP car.

The trim tag deciphering will also help with this information as may the rear end although optionally you could get almost any rear end.

Give us all the information you have and perhaps we can narrow it down further for you.

Paul,
The car doesn’t have air… the transmission was a power glide but now is a newer 4 speed. I have attached pictures for your info. I am told it was originally a 396 however I don’t know how they came to that conclusion.

Thanks for your help!

Without documentation you will never know what came in the car originally. All the trim code specifies is a V-8 and they were not always accurate as they are incorrectly about 15% of the time as an order was changed before finally assembly from V-8 to 6 or 6 to V-8 after the trim tag was attached to the vehicle. The only engine you could rule out is a 409 as 1965 was the last year they were used.

Engine

Unfortunately, there are no option codes on the trim tag to determine anything.

Send a message via AIM to TAR6569
Take a look behind the rear armrest panels on each side. There may be a build sheet stuck to the back side of one of them.
