Decode Help Needed

Hey folks,

I could use a little help on decoding a 327 I put in my 65 Impala SS 26 years ago. I went to get a fuel pump last week and (depending on the year) there were differences. I'm sure I've got one that will work, but it got me interested in finding out what the motor is and what it came out of. I've checked out mortec and several other sites and have been able to determine that it is from a 1968 Chev 250 or 275 HP, 4V carb, with a powerglide and built in Janesville Wisconson. Depending on the website, the vin and suffix code don't exactly match, but maybe that's just the way GM did "stuff". Anyway, here is the info I have.

Stamp on the front of the block: 18J 138201 V IOI2 HJ
Casting number: 3914678

Any additional information would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!!!

Thanks so much for the reply! What is supposed to be the date code really looks like an "I" not a 1 and the "0" looks like an "O". So that's what is kind of confusing. I can send a picture but I don't want to take up too much of anyone's time. Again thanks!

You can shoot the Pic as I could be wrong. 1012 is the only logical conclusion I could come up with for IOI2 because the only thing we were missing from your numbers was the Assembly Date.

The "I" is probably correct. I was just reading a "Cars and Parts" from 91 where they were restoring a 57 ragtop, and their engine had I instead of 1. They noted in the article that the letters were interchageable on castings.

Thanks everyone for the information! I appreciate you all taking the time to help out. And as the old Enco/Esso slogan used to say...... "Happy Motoring"!!!
