need help!! telling if a 68 is a true SS!!!

cowl reads
ST-6816447 BA14795
TR-836 GT
i just got a book on Impala's, and by the way i'am reading the book the codes don't show if it is a SS just a sport coupe, Impala custom. The other codes in the book are for caprice, bel air, biscayne, and impala, was the SS a package order for the car? and if so is there any other tags or ways to tell if it is a true SS? thanks

In 1968 the SS was a trim option rather than a performance option. You could order a six cylinder SS if you so desired. It bought you bucket seats basically.

Here's the way your Cowl Tag / VIN break down. As mentioned before, there is no way to determine a true SS (RPO Z03) from the Cowl Tag / VIN data by itself. If you can find a build sheet or have a Protecto-Plate, you would find RPO Z03 listed here indicating the SS package. If the car does have Bucket Seats, SS Door Panels, Console, "Supersport" emblem on the dash, along with the Super Sport emblems on the Grille, Trunk Lid, and front Fenders under the Impala script, then it's probably a pretty good bet that the car is a true SS. It really wouldn't be cost effective for someone to add all of these things to a non-SS Impala in an effort to make a few more bucks offf of the sale of the car.

Car built 3rd week of June. Should have bucket seats with that trim.
