where are the numbers????????

hi wade again. I have a 64 impala 283 2 door hard top non ss. I know where the suffix code is, but where are the other numbers on the block, tranny etc that I can look at to verify the originality of the car to engine.

Wade,
There are other numbers on the back of the block that include the block part number and the block casting date. The tranny dates depend on the type, powerglide is on the pan and manual is on the case. Lots of others you could look for such as rear end, intake, heads, alternator, distributor, etc if you want to. If you are interested I would suggest getting Alan Colvins "Chevrolet by the Numbers" for the early 60's chevrolets. It is a great resource for all these questions, it shows where to look and what they mean. There is nowhere on the web that all this information is summarized very well. You can find bits and pieces on line but spend the $25 and enjoy the "hunt".

What you need is Alan L. Colvin's definitive book on the subject of authentication; "Chevrolet by the Numbers: The Essential Chevrolet Parts Reference 1960-64". Amazon appears to out of stock again as they have the 1955-59 boock, and his 1965-69 book and his 1970-75 book in stook and his tome on the Corvette but not this one.
