VIN tag VS. engine stamp......

So my '65 rag top finally showed up here in Georgia . I spent the first couple days cleaning it and playing with the top...LOL but then I got down to the numbers...

I found the VIN on the door to be 276774 and the stamping on the 396 engine pad is T0427LB J 276773. Has to be a factory error right?

Welcome to the Team!

One sequential number off; I would call that numbers matching. They were hand stamped so some one picked up the wrong die set off the bench were they were stamped, or not paying attention to the sequence when assembling the dies in the fixture before smacking it with a big mallet.

But then I don't make the call, some judge in a car show does.

Thanks Dave. I am told I am lucky to even have a stamp before 1968.

Big blocks were stamped going back to the 409 motors that were in the '63 model year. Also fuel injected SBC models or any motor that was factory rated above 300 basically (because they were prone to theft).

Got any pictures of the vin, engine pad and cowl tag? Mistakes like that happened but are pretty unusual. Always neat to see!
