Engine ID

Have a later small block in my '62 and am trying to identify it. Hope someone can help. Here's the problem, the casting number is 3970010 and the "how to rebuild your small block" book I have shows this number as either a '68-'69 327 or a '68 -'79 350. There are no numbers on the front, apparently the block was decked.
If the book is right, is there any way to know which one it is? Dip stick on driver side if that matters. Thanks!! Bob

Not without dropping the oil pan to check the casting numbers on the crank. The length of the stroke is the only difference between the two engines.

On the opposite side to the 3970010, (behind the passenger side head) check for a casting date. If it's 1970 or newer it has to be a 350.
