69 caprice 427?

Hey my cousin owns a 1969 caprice that doesn't have the original motor in it. Is there any way to know what hp rating it was without checking the protecto-plate? I'm pretty sure it has the protecto-plate under the back seat because its all original and he bought from the first owners son and he said its all original and it hasn't been messed wwith, but my cousin doesn't want to tear it apart yet to see. Thanks

Protecto-Plate was usually stored in the glove box. It was your means of filing a warranty claim at the dealership if your car had a problem. The Protecto-Plate had every option your car left the factory with including the horsepower application of the motor. The Trim tag on the fire wall only tells you if the car was supposed to have a V-8 or a six and that was all it told you about the motor. It could be in error for a number of reasons. Because of this the VIN tag will tell you if you have a V-8 or a six as it was one of the the last parts that was attached to the car as it went down the line (unlike the trim tag which was already installed on the body before the build took place).

What you are looking for under the seat or carpet or under that dash or beneath the spare if you got rally wheels, or any where in the car that trash could be stashed without anyone seeing it is a copy of the build sheet. If you got a stripped down car with delete everything except standard equipment then odds are you do not have a build sheet in the car. If your car was heavily optioned then the odds of someone leaving a build sheet (which is to say some trash) in your car goes up; as they were supposed to throw the build sheet away after installing an installed. The more options your car had the greater the chance that some one didn't follow the rules and throw away the trash.

Where was the Caprice built? I can help you with good places to check depending on what plant it is from. if the car has the original transmission, you can tell by the suffix on the TH400 tag.
