Hi I am new here and Im restoring what I think is a 68 impala. I cant find any help with decoding the Body Tag. The Body tag is as follows
M A D E I N C A N A D A
ST68 16467 ST 554513 BODY
TR859 160570 SS PAINT
If anybody can help me with this I really appreciate it. It is a Impala SS Convertible I believe original color was Sierra Fawn Metallic. I would really like to understand this tag. Thanks Mike

The 5B tells you that your car was made in the second week (B) of the fifth month (5) of the production year 1968 (68) at the St Therese, Quebec assembly plant (ST). The 16467 tells you that you have an Impala two door convertible, with Parchment vinyl bucket seats (859) and the SS says that it is painted Sierra Fawn (a custom color not normally offered on an Impala).
If you pay for your copy of the original documentation you will know everything their is to know about your car except for who the original and all subsequent owners were.
Hey Thanks a lot Guys. I'm doing this car and a 58' Impala convertible as well. I'm trying to learn all that I can about this car. It does have alot of(strange to me) items on it. The owner says its a 327, Should it have the cable tie downs on it? Theres no tachometer in the dash. Were tachs just an option? Saddest thing is my customer had another guy work on it and he butchered the crap outta this poor car so I'm trying to starighten it out for him. Thanks for the info guys.
Buy the paper work and you get a copy of everything that the factory put on the car (the build sheet). You will know as much about the car as the original owner.
Tachs where optional equipment and came with the instrumentation package when order.
The cable tie downs on the motor would have come from a local GM dealer that installed them in 1968 as a result of the first ever factory recall as a result of a law suit Ralph Nader brought against GM. This assumes that the original owner still owned the car in 1968 and took it in for repair when he received the recall notice. If the car was sold GM had no way of contacting the second or subsequent owners of the car to have the cable tie downs installed and as such the car wouldn't have them.
Hi Mike, Those numbers and letters under MADE IN CANADA are the option codes for what's installed in the car:
A31 power windows
M40 3-speed auto trans= TH400
U75 power rear antenna;, only about 4100 were sold. also means that there was an AM radio since the rear antenna was only available with AM.
Z03 Super Sport
As suggested, get the docs from GM of Canada. One of my 68s was built there too. Don S
Dave and Don Thanks for the info. The car isnt mine but Im wishing it was. The more I learn it seems this car may be worth something and the current owner doesnt care as he has only had butchers work on it. So sad
Hi Carl, thanks for posting the pics. Interesting how the pop was stamped in error showing the letter S for 3spd manual and then dealer then wrote it on the pre delivery inspection form. I bet the trans reads R0725. Is that the original dealer emblem on the trunklid? Is the car all original?
