Trim tag decoding and fullsize database

I am working on an impala database 64-69 for all assembly plants and some 70. This list includes vin and trim tag info. I have 2,600 cars in my list right now.

I can also decode cowl tags, drivetrain codes and protectoplates for anyone that needs them decoded. I know most of the codes and the styles of the tags.

I also have databases for protectoplates, engine blocks and some other ones. If you have any old paperwork or something from a fullsize chevy with numebrs from the car on it, I would be interested in the info for my list. Thanks for any help and I hope I can be of some help inthe future.

Glad there is a site like this now. When was it started?

Thanks, Warren L.

I'll see if I can gather any informantion.
I have a mint condition un-restored 1966 four door with a 396 from the factory.

Do you know how rare the 1966 4-door sedan sport is with the 396/400th combo?

I have actually seen several 66 sport sedans with 396's. Regular 4dr sedans (with the window pillar) are harder to find with 396's.

I posted the thread about the 69 Impala SS 427 that I may have an opportunity to buy tomorrow. I can do the numbers on the drivetrain, but if you have any advice on anything in particular that I should look for, I would appreciate the info and I will definatly be contacting you with any available info about this car if I do buy it. It is a one owner car handed down to the son who said that he has no knowledge of any type of docs but that his father may have some. He implied that he is not aware of what a P.O.P is and apparently just threw away a gas reciept from the first fillup in 69, thinking it was just leftover trash. I'll let you know what happens if interested. Thanks, Gary

There are no exact figures to the production number of 4spd in 66. Could you send me the vin#? I have 2 other 66's from Janesville in the list with the same build date as yours. I need to vin to fit in it. The two I have are 6J272358 and 6J274432. The last 66 assembled in may of 66 at the janesville plant was 6J273290.

Hi 8secnova...I'm the other half of the database mentioned. TAR6569 work together on it along with a lot of help from the Camaro Research Group....I do strictly '67-'70 full size. Let's gather some info on the car and maybe we can figure out how rare it is. Interested?

Do a Google search on New Jersey Late Great Chevys. They have a service available that may meet your needs.

If you send me all of the info off the trim tag on the firewall, I can decode it for free. I can decode anyones tags 64-70 and some 60-63.

Ok, I have a VERY similar tag on my '66 Impala. It shows the code '842-A'. I also have the 'W' AND the '5Y' but nothing else, all of these under the Accessory codes area. Anyone got any clue on these? I'm guessing that the 842 is the interior color code that the 348-409 site has listed. It also calls out the 'W' as a tinted windshield.

I know they have a cut off at '65, but I have to believe they'd have to be either the same or close.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Here it is if it helps...

The W is Tinted Windshield and the 5Y is deluxe belts. The A in 842-A is the seat code meaning regular bench seat with no headrests
What is your vin# and what engine does the car have?

Warren.

Good to know about the A, THANKS!

VIN is 164376NXXXXXX

The engine is the stock 2BBL 283/Power Glide.

I don't know what rear end it has, (other than the OG 10 bolt) and it was 'rebuilt' about 10K miles ago with new axles. Apparently, it was locked up when the PO bought the car and that was the first repair he did to the car.

I would like to recommend two books for a lot of decode information straight from the horses mouth; or as close to it as GM will allow (former top engineer with access to all of the info and saved stuff as Chevy like drawings as GM tossed it).

http://www.amazon.com/Chevrolet-Numbers-Essential-Reference-1960-1964/dp/0837609364/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1228348213&sr=8-2
http://www.amazon.com/Chevrolet-Numbers-1965-69-Essential-Reference/dp/B000OLUCX0/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1228348213&sr=8-4
He also has info on 1970-'75 Chevys

http://www.amazon.com/Chevrolet-Numbers-1970-75-Essential-Reference/dp/B000OLUCXK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1228348213&sr=8-3
and for tri five and the 1958-'59 Chevy's

http://www.amazon.com/Chevrolet-Numbers-Essential-Reference-1955-1959/dp/0837608759/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1228348213&sr=8-1
These are considered the definitive authentication and source of casting numbers. He has the orriginal blue prints and explains the change orders that caused heads to evolve from one casting number to another.
