Welcome to the Team Bob!

Post an in focus picture of your car's Trim Tag on the firewall (use the close-up or flower button to take a picture closer than six feet from the subject). Then we can decode it for you.

Your engine is either a 195 hose 283 or a 250 horse 327 if a small block. The 409 big block "W" motors where an option in 1964 but few where made. It came in either a 340 horse configuration or the 400 horse high performance version with the special high performance 425 horse two four barrel option being ultra rare. Actually there was a 300 horsepower 327 also offered in 1964; but that is even more unusual to find under the hood than the big block was, because those that wanted horsepower were going to go for more than the small block could offer.

Here is a reproduction of a 1964 sales brochure showing all of the options and colors available in 1964.

If the fuel line is still original, that can give you a few hints about the original motor. The 327/300 and the 409's had a larger fuel line than the 6 cylinder, 283 and 327/250. Some or all of the 409's had a return line as well to help keep the fuel cooler. So if you have two fuel lines, it was a 409 of some sort. Smaller fuel line and you had a 283 or 327/250. Large fuel line with no return would be a 327/300 or a 409 (need to check on that, but I am pretty sure that is right).

Playing the statistics game, the most common V8 would have been the 283, followed by the 327/250.

The VIN breaks down like this:
4=1964
1447=2 door hardtop sport coupe Impala SS with a V8 engine
S=St Louis Missouri plant
323175= Sequence number
