Loose Steering Wheel

The steering wheel in my 67 Impala is a bit loose and I'm not sure how to fix it.

So basically, there is nothing wrong with the steering or how the car is handling, I'll stress that first! however the wheel has some movement in it and can be pulled forward (towards the driver) and then pushed back, enough that this is annoying me and will jump around a bit going over bumps in the road etc.

I have pulled the steering wheel off and it is the metal threaded shaft part that the wheel bolts onto that has the movement in it.

I had a mechanic look at it and he said it wasn't affecting the steering or anything important so not to worry about it, he said it was just cause it was old and basically that's how it is.

Any ideas on what the problem is?

You will need to rebuild the steering column as the factory installed brass bushings appear to be worn out by your description.

Is there a rebuild kit you can buy?
