67 Caprice steering column popping, help!

Hello,
my friendly Impala forums enthusiast/experts.
I come to call on your expertise in helping me diagnose a popping coming from just above the rag joint.
When I move my steering wheel side to side is when it happens. I have a video of it but I took screen shots to show the exact area.
The grey area moves slightly, the the black area moves to the side a little when the popping noise occurs.
My apologies for not knowing the correct terminology of the grey and black areas.
Has anyone had similar problems before?
Thank you,
3del

There is a mesh cylinder inside my column that makes it collapsible upon impact. A steering column mechanic in Nashville I found said mine is wore out and that is whats causing my issue.
