Power Steering box replacement question

Hi all

Need to replace the power steering box in my 66 Impala SS Convertible. It's leaking like a sieve and time to replace. Not interested in any leak fixing fluids since they only seem to swell the seals and doesn't appear to be a proper fix.

What is the best box on the market? Not looking for deep technical specs or anything like that. Just need some advice on the best brands to go with and the ones to stay away from. Would like to have the steering tight. Leaning towards a new box and not a rebuild since the prices appear to be negligible.

Saginaw is the brand you want. If you want to change how the car feels use a newer one out of a mid eighties up Chevy, Ford or Jeep.

Thanks for the reply. Could you point to a link that has the mid-eighties Saginaw one? Looks like there are a ton of choices and I dont want to chose poorly. Dont want to make a mistake here.

A part # or SKU # would be great...thx!

Pick a rebuilt one from rock auto dot com to fit a 1987 Monte Carlo SS.

You will need a rag joint to allow the steering column to mount to the rag joint that also fits the gear box. You will need flare fitting to O-ring adapters that are available everywhere (even your corner auto parts store sells the), or a replacement set of new power steering hoses that has flare on one end and an O-ring on the other.

will this do the job? its the rag joint and box.... RockAuto

Not sure about the rag joint. It should adapt a metriuc box to an English SAE column. I have been told that 1977-and-up Chevy pickup (GM part number 7826542) will adapt the old and new parts together.

I was able to get the rag joint on Amazon using your part number..

Ordered the gear box from O'Reilly ( https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/m...rlo?q=steering) since Rock Auto shipping (need it Thurs) was crazy high.

I'm certain this is a stupid question, but i'm looking at replacing mine as well. mostly because of the room between it and the header. Currently the PO had to "squish" that #7 tube to clear the Steering box. I was told get a narrower PS box.

Well.... ok. I'm curious if this box you all are discussing from the Monte Carlo would work on my 65 SS???

I have a new set of headers, Hooker Super Comp, that have a different bend than the last set of Aftermarket headers that were on there.

I certainly won't change a steering box because of a header tube. It is infinitely easier to change the primary tube. Cut and Paste in another tube from left over tail pipes found around the back of any muffler shop.

There are no thinner steering gear boxes only smaller overall sizes, such as a Corvair or a Vega gear box. They are however light duty because they are off of a light car.
