Column Shift, non-tilt
The lower steering column bearing in my car is SHOT - not concentric at all with the steering shaft. Does anyone know a source for these? Exhaustive google searching has turned up nothing...I'm getting a bad feeling about this one.
I looked it up in the GM parts book, 7806142 is the GM number. Maybe you can find something that way. My 66 is different but I when I did the lower bearing on it this past winter I went to ebay, punched in the number for mine and found an NOS bearing for $15. Maybe you will be lucky too.
Oh, and it's the same as 68 Camaro and Chevelle, so maybe that will help your search.
Yeah, I searched a bit and I think the best I found was $60. Seems hard to believe but maybe that's what they cost...
A case of supply and demand. You can take you old bearing down to a Fafnir or Timken warehouse located in your town and see if they can match your bearing with one in stock for another application. If so post that application here so others will know what to order.
I miked my old bearings to rebuild the transmission in my 1947 John Deere tractor (original service parts discontinued) and found matching bearings off of industrial fans to Isuzu trucks to replace them.
I believe I saw something similar to what your describing at the website for IDIDIT or Flaming River. (back when I was shopping for a new steering column)
They probably aren't cheap, but, it's a possible alternative.
