‘67 impala Power steering box replacement

Any recommendations for a performance replacement steering box? Figure I should replace it while the engine is out. I heard something about using a box out of jeep? Thanks for the help.

What you are looking for is a variable ratio (aka Quick Turn) Saginaw box out of an 1984 and up vehicle. Yes this box was used in jeeps and Fords as well as Chevys. You really want one out of a B-body police car as it will be a heavy duty 600 series box. Jeeps and other light vehicles had a lighter duty 500 or 800 series steering box.

Not all Saginaw steering gear boxes were created equal! That is to say the vehicle's turning radius (tires size and distance to the frame or fender) determines where the wheel stops are located inside the box (they are adjustable, but the box has to be opened up to get to them). Additionally the actual ratio varies. Some had fewer turns lock to lock, but required more effort to turn.

Newer boxes offer road feel instead of a floating sensation were you can not feel the road surface through the steering wheel, but that did NOT require more effort from the driver.

Sports cars and cop cars had better (more agile steering), but this required more effort on your part. Luxury land yachts had worse (no feed back, and vague steering), but granny GoodWrench could drive the car with one lace gloved finger on the wheel.

Here are a couple of car mag articles that list parts sources and explain better what you will be faced with.
